The lesson here I think is that the guns symbolize violence, and the potential thereof. The mother didn't want Billy Joe to bring his guns to town because it's not the people Bill might shoot that she's worried about, she's worried that Bill's pride might get in the way and he might try to draw down. But there's always someone stronger, faster and meaner than old Billy.

The moral to this story is: Don't go thinking you're tough just bcuz you got some liquor, drugs, etc. in your system & you're armed !!! It's all about who gets who 1st & alcohol & drugs tend to make you have bad judgment & delayed reactions… look @ dead Billy !!!

I doubt there is any specific story behind it. The young and foolish cowboy wanting to prove his manhood is a common and repeated theme in westerns.

Yesterday I was driving quiet when a guy cut me off the road. But I've heard a voice in my mind, not my mom's, but Jhony's voice: "don't take your guns to town". So, nobody died.

On this day in 1959 {February 8th} Johnny Cash performed "Don't Take Your Guns To Town" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'…
One month earlier on January 19th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #32 and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100…
And on February 23rd it reached #1 {for 6 weeks} on Billboard's Hot C&W Sides chart…
Johnny Cash passed away on September 12th, 2003 at the age of 71…
R.I.P. Mr. Cash and Mr. Sullivan {1901 — 1974}…
